Lion Air plane 'not airworthy' and should have been grounded, say investigators

The Indonesian authorities have concluded that the Lion Air plane that crashed last month killing 189 people was not fit to fly and should have been grounded after recurring technical problems.  The Boeing 737 MAX vanished from radar about 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, on October 29, slamming into the Java Sea at 450 miles per hour moments after the pilot had asked to return to the airport.  Data from the jetliner, presented in preliminary findings by accident investigators on Wednesday, showed the pilots fought to prevent the crash from the moment the plane took off as the 737’s nose was repeatedly forced down, apparently by an automatic system receiving incorrect sensor readings. The information from the flight data recorder reveals that the crews successfully battled to raise the nose over two dozen times before finally losing control.  The National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) did not pinpoint a definitive cause of the accident, with a final crash report not likely to be filed until next year. However, it admonished Lion Air, the nation’s largest budget carrier, for repeatedly putting the plane back into service despite failing to fix a problem with the airspeed indicator in the days leading up to the fatal flight.   Jakarta plane crash: Flight Lion Air JT610 Its previous flight, on the eve of the crash, was from Denpasar in Bali to Jakarta. The pilots had reported the same problem but had de-activated the anti-stall system and continued to fly manually.  “During [that] flight, the plane was experiencing a technical problem but the pilot decided to continue,” Nurcahyo Utomo, aviation head of the KNKT told reporters. The report outlines the maintenance procedures that were carried out in response.   “In our opinion, the plane was no longer airworthy and should not have continued,” he said, according to the BBC.  The report itself does not explicitly spell out that conclusion. Instead it urges the airline to improve its safety culture, including to increase pilots’ knowledge of emergency procedures, and to better document repair work on its planes.  The initial findings will also heighten concerns there were problems with key systems in one of the world's newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes. Investigators have previously said the doomed aircraft had problems with its airspeed indicator and angle of attack (AOA) sensors, prompting Boeing to issue a special bulletin telling operators what to do when they face the same situation. An AOA sensor provides data about the angle at which air is passing over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting. The information can be critical in preventing an aircraft from stalling.  Boeing 737 MAX | Who has ordered the plane? The KNKT has retrieved one of the plane's black boxes - the flight data recorder  - but is yet to locate the cockpit voice recorder, which will give more details of how the pilots acted to tackle the problem.  Indonesia's aviation safety record has improved since its airlines, including national carrier Garuda, were subject to years-long bans from US and European airspace for safety violations, although the country has still recorded 40 fatal accidents over the past 15 years. Lion Air’s parent group, which also operates Batik Air and Wings Air, has captured half the domestic market in less than 20 years of operation to become Southeast Asia's biggest airline, but it has been dogged by a dubious safety record and an avalanche of complaints over shoddy service.  Last week a searing investigation by the New York Times, based on interviews with dozens of Lion Air’s management personnel and flight and ground crew members, as well as investigators and aviation analysts, painted a picture of a carrier that allegedly prioritised growth over safety.  Fifteen major safety lapses have been documented in recent years, including a crash that killed 25 people. The airline went over his head to gain permission to fly from officials in Jakarta and the flight took off anyway.  But Boeing has also come under fire for possible glitches on the 737 MAX - which entered service just last year. Several relatives of the crash victims have already filed lawsuits against Boeing, including the family of a young doctor who was to have married his high school sweetheart this month. Authorities have called off the grim task of identifying victims of the crash, with 125 passengers officially recognised after testing on human remains that filled some 200 body bags.

90-year-old woman dies in collision with electric scooter

A 90-year-old Spanish woman has died after a collision with an electric scooter in what is believed to be the first accident of its kind in the world. Two men were sharing a scooter when they smashed into the woman, who hit her head on the ground and died of her injuries in hospital a few days later. The pair are facing trial for manslaughter.  According to the police investigation cited by the Spanish newspaper El País, the two unnamed men were travelling at more than 30 kilometres per hour along a street shared by pedestrians and traffic in the Barcelona suburb of Esplugues de Llobregat. The accident, which was not reported at the time, occurred in August.  Last month a 40-year-old woman was killed in Sabadell, near Barcelona, when she fell off the electric scooter she was using and was run over by a truck. The exponential growth of electric scooters in cities in Spain and elsewhere has promoted debate about their safety and where they should be allowed to circulate. Out-of-date laws meant for non-motorised scooters mean that in Madrid, for example, they can be ridden on the pavement, although the city council is drawing up plans to restrict their use. In Barcelona a taxi driver videoed a teenage couple riding on a scooter at 50 miles an hour, presumably after manipulating the device to raise its maximum speed. Spain’s interior minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said in October that traffic rules must be changed to protect “especially vulnerable” road users, noting that this year would be the first on record in which pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists’ deaths would outnumber those of drivers. British law already bans E-scooters and several towns and cities in California have ordered the vehicles off the streets. Hire-scooter company Bird has filed a lawsuit against Beverley Hills, following one such ban in the well-heeled neighbourhood.

اسلام آباد میں کشمیر کانفرنس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے دفتر خارجہ کے ترجمان ڈاکٹر فیصل کا کہنا تھا کہ دنیا کا کوئی قانون انڈیا کو کشمیریوں پر ظلم کرنے کی اجازت نہیں دیتا، پاکستان برٹش کشمیر گروپ کی رپورٹ کو سراہتا ہے،  برطانوی کشمیر گروپ کی رپورٹ نے کشمیر میں جاری مظالم کو سامنے لایا ، رپورٹس میں بھارتی مظالم کا تفصیل سے ذکر ہے جب کہ اقوام متحدہ کی انسانی حقوق کونسل نے بھی کشمیر میں مظالم کی تصدیق کی۔

ترجمان دفتر خارجہ نے کہا کہ کشمیری اپنے خون سے تاریخ لکھ رہے ہیں، مقبوضہ کشمیرمیں کم ووٹر ٹرن آؤٹ ثابت کرتا ہے کہ وہاں کے لوگ بھارت سے کتنا تنگ ہیں،  کسی ملک کے لیے ممکن نہیں کہ وہ کسی دوسرے ملک کے لاکھوں لوگوں کو باہرنکلنے پر مجبور کرے تاہم ایسا صرف اس طرح ممکن ہے کہ کسی ملک کے لوگ خود احتجاج کے لیے باہر نکلیں۔

ڈاکٹر فیصل کا کہنا تھا کہ مسئلہ کشمیر کا حل کشمیریوں کی مرضی اور منشاء کے مطابق ہونا ہے اور پاکستان بھی سفارتکاری کے زریعے مسئلہ کشمیر کا حل چاہتا ہے لیکن لگتا یہ ہے کہ انڈیا کو ابھی تک اپنی غلطیوں کا ادراک نہیں ہوا۔

ڈپریشن کی دوائیں بھی بیکٹیریا میں اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت بڑھا رہی ہیں

برسبین: آسٹریلوی سائنسدانوں نے دریافت کیا ہے کہ ڈپریشن کے علاج میں عام استعمال ہونے والی دوائیں بھی جرثوموں میں اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت بڑھا کر انہیں غیرمعمولی طور پر مضبوط بنا رہی ہیں۔ اگرچہ ماضی میں ڈپریشن کی دواؤں (اینٹی ڈپریسینٹس) کے مختلف منفی اثرات سامنے آتے رہے ہیں مگر اِن کا تعلق انسان کی دماغی اور جسمانی صحت ہی سے تھا۔ لیکن یہ پہلا موقعہ ہے کہ جب ان کا تعلق جرثوموں (بیکٹیریا) میں اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت سے بھی دیکھنے میں آیا ہے۔

برسبین، آسٹریلیا کی یونیورسٹی آف کوینزلینڈ میں ’’ایڈوانسڈ واٹر مینیجمنٹ سینٹر‘‘ سے وابستہ جیانہوا گوو اور ان کے ساتھیوں نے ’’ای کولائی‘‘ نامی جرثومے پر تحقیق کے دوران یہ تشویشناک دریافت کی ہے۔ کئی ماہ تک جاری رہنے والی اس تحقیق سے معلوم ہوا کہ ڈپریشن کی عام اور مقبول دواؤں میں شامل ایک اہم مرکب ’’فلوکسیٹائن‘‘ (fluoxetine) سے صرف تیس دن تک سامنا ہونے پر جرثوموں میں انتہائی مؤثر اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت میں 5 کروڑ گنا تک اضافہ ہوسکتا ہے۔ یقیناً یہ بہت خطرے کی بات ہے۔

البتہ، تجربہ گاہ کے ماحول میں یہ تحقیق صرف ای کولائی بیکٹیریا پر کی گئی ہے جبکہ ابھی اسے دیگر اقسام کے جرثوموں پر، خاص کر بیماریاں پھیلانے والے جراثیم پر آزمایا جانا باقی ہے۔

واضح رہے کہ قبل ازیں ماہرین کی یہی ٹیم ہینڈ واش اور ٹوتھ پیسٹ کے ایک عام جزو ’’ٹرائی کلوسان‘‘ پر تحقیق کرکے ثابت کرچکی ہے کہ اس کے باقاعدہ استعمال سے جراثیم میں اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت بڑھ جاتی ہے۔ البتہ، تازہ تحقیق کہیں زیادہ تشویشناک ہے کیونکہ اس سے ایک طرف تو یہ پتا چلتا ہے کہ فلوکسیٹائن کی حامل 11 فیصد دوائیں ہمارے جسم میں پہنچنے کے بعد بالکل بھی تبدیل نہیں ہوتیں تو دوسری جانب یہ بھی معلوم ہوا ہے کہ جتنے لمبے عرصے تک جرثوموں کا سامنا فلوکسیٹائن سے رہے گا، جرثوموں میں اینٹی بایوٹکس کے خلاف مزاحمت بھی اسی قدر بڑھتی جائے گی۔

اس تحقیق کی تفصیلات ریسرچ جرنل ’’اینوائرونمنٹ انٹرنیشنل‘‘ کے تازہ شمارے میں شائع ہوئی ہیں۔

رجنی کانت بھی ہیکرزکے آگے بے بس، 2.0 کو کروڑوں کا دھچکا

ممبئی: بھارت میں فلموں کو آن لائن لیک کرنے والی غیرقانونی ویب سائٹ ’تمل روکرز‘ نے فلم 2.0 کو ریلیز کے چند گھنٹوں بعد ہی لیک کرکے اپنی دھمکی پر عمل کردکھایا۔

گزشتہ ماہ غیر قانونی ویب سائٹ ’تمل روکرز‘ نے سپراسٹار رجنی کانت اوراکشے کمار کی فلم ’2.0‘ کو آن لائن لیک کرنے کی دھمکی دی تھی۔ غیرقانونی ویب سائٹ کی انتظامیہ کی دھمکی کو سنجیدگی سے لیتے ہوئے بھارتی عدالت نے  انٹرنیٹ سروس مہیا کرنے والی کمپنیوں کو فلموں کو آن لائن لیک کرنے والی ویب سائٹس کے خلاف کارروائی کا حکم دیا تھا تاہم ’تمل روکرز‘ کو کسی کا خوف نہیں، عدالتی احکام کے باوجود اس نے اپنی دھمکی پر عمل کردکھایا اور فلم ریلیز کے چند گھنٹوں بعد ہی 2 ڈی ورژن میں لیک کردی۔

فلم آن لائن لیک ہونے پرآسکرایوارڈ یافتہ موسیقارریسول پوکوٹی نے غصے کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے رجنی کانت کے مداحوں کو فلم لیک کرنے والوں کو سبق سیکھانے کا مطالبہ کیا ہے۔ دوسری جانب فلم لیک ہونے سے اس کا اثرفلم کے بزنس پر پڑے گا جس سے فلم کوکروڑوں کو دھچکا لگے گا۔

واضح رہے کہ تقریباً ساڑھے 5 سو کروڑکے بجٹ سے بننے والی فلم ’2.0‘ اب تک کی بھارت کی مہنگی ترین فلم ہے جو گزشتہ روز ریلیزکی گئی ہے۔ بھارتی تجزیہ نگار رامیش بالا کے مطابق فلم نے ریلیز کے پہلے روز’ٹھگ آف ہندوستان‘کا ریکارڈ توڑتے ہوئے تقریباً 58 کروڑ کی کمائی کی ہے جب کہ عامر خان کی فلم نے 52 کروڑ کمائے تھے۔
